The findings highlight one of the key challenges facing Serbia’s rapidly expanding information and communications technology industry. While the sector is often viewed as one of the country’s most modern and merit-based fields, the latest data suggests that salary disparities between men and women continue to persist across a range of positions and experience levels.
Experts point out that the gap cannot be explained solely by differences in education or qualifications, as women are increasingly represented in technical professions and higher education. Instead, factors such as underrepresentation in senior management positions, career interruptions related to family responsibilities and broader labour market inequalities are frequently cited as contributing causes.
The issue reflects a wider trend across Serbia’s labour market, where women generally earn less than men on average. Although the ICT industry remains one of the country’s highest-paying sectors and has created new opportunities for professional advancement, advocates argue that achieving greater gender equality will require stronger efforts to promote women into leadership roles and ensure equal opportunities for career progression.
As Serbia continues positioning itself as a regional technology hub, addressing pay disparities is increasingly seen as an important step toward building a more competitive, innovative and inclusive digital economy.
