The City of Belgrade expects the complete replacement of non-air-conditioned buses and trams to take place over the coming years, meaning passengers will continue to encounter older vehicles on some routes until the renewal process is completed.
The modernization programme also includes the introduction of newer, more energy-efficient buses aimed at improving passenger comfort and reducing maintenance costs. During periods of extreme summer heat, the lack of air conditioning in parts of the fleet has remained one of the most frequent complaints among commuters, particularly as Belgrade experiences increasingly frequent heatwaves.
It has been said that replacing the entire fleet cannot be completed overnight due to procurement schedules and financial constraints, but insist that every newly purchased vehicle now meets modern comfort standards, including air conditioning.
Improving public transport has become one of Belgrade’s key infrastructure priorities as the city seeks to encourage greater use of public transit while adapting its transport system to rising temperatures and growing passenger demand.
