Her mandate begins at an important moment for Montenegro, as the country is preparing to assume the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The presidency will give Podgorica an opportunity to place particular emphasis on issues central to the organisation, including human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
Šćepanović brings nearly two decades of diplomatic experience to the position and is expected to play an important role in strengthening Montenegro’s engagement with the Council of Europe and advancing cooperation with its member states.
Montenegro has long identified the Council of Europe as an important partner in its efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and the rule of law. Cooperation with the organisation also supports the country’s broader European integration agenda, particularly in areas such as judicial reform, human rights protection and institutional accountability.
During its upcoming presidency, Montenegro will have the opportunity to further promote these priorities while contributing to discussions on some of the key challenges facing the wider European community. The Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country remains committed to stronger European cooperation and a more effective Council of Europe, with Šćepanović’s appointment expected to contribute to that goal.
