And Then There Were Four: World Cup Reaches Its Decisive Stage

France, Spain, England and Argentina remain in the race for football’s biggest prize, setting up two blockbuster semi-finals that promise to define the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The quarter-finals of the Wold Cup 2026 produced a mix of expected favorites and memorable underdog stories. France defeated Morocco 2-0, while Spain edged Belgium 2-1 to book the first semi-final. England overcame a resilient Norway 2-1 after extra time, and defending champions Argentina beat Switzerland 3-1 after extra time to complete the final four. Switzerland, in particular, emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises, once again proving that discipline, organization and collective spirit can bridge the gap with football’s traditional giants.

Attention now turns to two heavyweight clashes. France and Spain will meet on 14 July in Dallas, while Argentina face England on 15 July in Atlanta. The winners will compete in the World Cup Final on 19 July at New York New Jersey Stadium, with the third-place match scheduled a day earlier in Miami.

As the football has captivated millions, the tournament has also been accompanied by familiar controversies. Several refereeing decisions involving Argentina have reignited debates among fans over whether FIFA favors its biggest stars, particularly Lionel Messi. Such claims, however, remain unproven and are common after high-profile matches, raising a broader question that follows almost every major tournament: does politics and commercial influence interfere with sport, or do emotions surrounding defeat simply make supporters search for explanations beyond the pitch?

The truth likely lies somewhere in between—football today is both a sport and a global business, making scrutiny inevitable whenever the stakes are highest.

Another storyline has been the remarkable rise of Norway, whose energetic performances and close-knit celebrations won over neutral supporters despite their quarter-final exit. Much of the spotlight naturally fell on Erling Braut Haaland, whose popularity extends far beyond his goals. Modern football increasingly blurs the line between athlete and public figure, prompting discussions over whether players should be judged solely by their performances or also by the example they set away from the pitch. While fans ultimately pay to watch footballing ability, personalities, leadership and conduct off the field have become an inseparable part of how today’s stars are perceived.

With only four teams remaining, the tournament has reached the stage where every detail matters. Whether the trophy ultimately goes to the experience of Argentina, the efficiency of England, the attacking brilliance of Spain or the depth of France, the 2026 World Cup now has the semifinal lineup many predicted before the tournament began-and the football world will be watching.
