Paris Olympics Boost French Economy, Create Over 180,000 Jobs

The Paris 2024 Olympics are expected to boost France's economy by 0.5% in the third quarter, generate significant consumer spending, contribute up to 11.1 billion euros by 2034, and create over 180,000 jobs

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are set to significantly boost France’s economy, with the country’s central bank forecasting a 0.5% increase in national GDP during the third quarter, driven by the economic activity surrounding the events.

This follows a 0.3% growth in the second quarter, with the Games having a substantial impact on Paris and the broader national economy.

Consumer Spending Surge in Paris During Olympics

The positive economic effects are also reflected in consumer spending, with Visa reporting a 26% increase in sales by small businesses in Paris during the first weekend of the Olympics compared to the previous year. U.S.

Visa cardholders, who account for a significant portion of international spending, increased their expenditures by 29% year-over-year.

Initial Tourism Concerns and Long-Term Economic Impact

Despite initial concerns that the Games might deter regular tourism to Paris, the economic impact is expected to be substantial. The Centre for Law and Economics of Sport (CDES) at the University of Limoges estimates that the Games could contribute between 6.7 and 11.1 billion euros to the French economy by 2034, with 70% of this coming from construction and event organization, and 30% from tourism.

Job Creation and Skills Development from Paris 2024

In terms of employment, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) predicts that the Paris Olympics will create a total of 181,000 jobs, along with providing professional skills training for 30,000 individuals, further emphasizing the long-term benefits of hosting the world’s largest sporting event.
