Albania has reached a significant new stage in its path toward European Union membership after meeting interim benchmarks linked to key reforms in the fundamentals cluster of negotiations. The announcement was made during meetings in Brussels attended by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Cypriot Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna.
European officials confirmed that closing benchmarks have now been set for areas including judicial independence, anti-corruption measures and rule of law reforms.
The move is considered an important milestone because it enables Albania to begin formally closing negotiating chapters during the accession process.
Officials described the next phase of negotiations as the most demanding so far, requiring deeper reforms and continued efforts to strengthen institutional trust with EU member states. Albania has repeatedly stated that EU integration remains one of its main strategic priorities.
