The North Macedonian government has launched the “New Year Consumer Basket” initiative to help ease financial pressures on households during the holiday season. Starting on 15 December, over 900 products from 83 companies will be sold at discounts of at least 10%, running until 15 January. The products, labelled with the message “Less cost, more for you, we care about you,” are designed to offer relief during a time of year typically associated with higher expenses.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski stated that the initiative is the result of collaboration with economic chambers, trade unions, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. He clarified that the “New Year Consumer Basket” is not a government price control measure, but a voluntary, consensus-based solution. There will be no penalties for non-compliance, only oversight to ensure proper labeling of discounted products.
The initiative comes as the country faces ongoing inflation and rising living costs. It seeks to make essential goods more affordable during the festive season, offering consumers some respite while boosting confidence in the marketplace. The government hopes the campaign will provide tangible support for families struggling with the cost of living.
