The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources of North Macedonia and the United Nations Development Programme have officially strengthened their cooperation through a joint declaration supporting the country’s Just Energy Transition Investment Platform (JETIP). The partnership is intended to reinforce institutional capacities for implementing a long-term energy transition strategy focused on sustainability, energy security and social inclusion.
JETIP serves as the government’s main coordination mechanism for linking priority energy investments – including renewable energy, transmission infrastructure, energy storage and system flexibility – with measures designed to ensure a socially fair transition. The platform also includes programmes aimed at workforce retraining, support for small and medium-sized enterprises and greater involvement of communities traditionally dependent on the coal sector.
Energy Minister Sanja Božinovska said the partnership with UNDP would strengthen support for local communities and stakeholders directly affected by the transition process. UNDP Resident Representative Armen Grigoryan highlighted the country’s climate ambitions, including a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 82% by 2030.
According to officials, the initiative aims to help deliver 1.7 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity while mobilising major investments in grid modernisation, energy storage and green financing programmes supported by institutions including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
