Human Rights Situation in Serbia – An Important Subject

Officials warned about growing social tensions, discriminatory rhetoric and increasing pressure on media and civil society actors.

Serbian Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Milan Antonijević met with Michael O’Flaherty – the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe – to discuss the state of human rights protection and equality in the country. The talks focused on freedom of expression, media freedom, freedom of assembly and the protection of civic space amid growing political and social divisions.

According to the statement, both sides expressed concern over the rise of discriminatory narratives and different forms of pressure directed at journalists and civil society organisations.

Antonijević also noted that the institution’s recent practice indicates an increase in discrimination based on political affiliation over the past two years.

The two officials agreed that free, responsible and professional media represent one of the key pillars of a democratic society and an important ally in combating discrimination. During the meeting, the Serbian commissioner also highlighted the importance of long-standing cooperation with the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade, while O’Flaherty expressed support for efforts aimed at ensuring equal rights and protections for all citizens.
