Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić stated that the protection of the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor is a key state priority, highlighting a series of measures introduced by the government to preserve the site’s exceptional universal value. He also thanked UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany and the organisation’s advisory bodies for their continued cooperation and support.
According to Spajić, the government has introduced a moratorium within Kotor’s protected zone and launched similar mechanisms in Herceg Novi, alongside actions targeting illegal activities and further adjustments to Montenegro’s spatial planning framework.
Officials say the measures demonstrate the country’s willingness to implement stricter protections in order to safeguard internationally protected heritage areas.
The statement comes amid ongoing discussions over balancing tourism development, infrastructure expansion and environmental preservation along Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, where UNESCO-protected sites face increasing urban and investment pressures.
