Serbia’s education unions are calling on the government to honour previously agreed commitments and introduce further salary increases for teachers and other education workers.
Representatives of the unions stressed that improving the material position of employees in education remains essential for the sustainability of the sector. They warned that without continued salary growth, Serbia could face increasing difficulties in retaining qualified teachers and attracting new staff to schools.
The unions also pointed to the need for greater predictability in wage policy and clearer guarantees regarding future increases. They said that agreements reached between the government and education employees should be implemented in full, rather than being postponed or changed without consultation.
Education workers have repeatedly raised concerns about salaries, working conditions and the broader status of the profession in Serbia. The unions say fulfilling the existing commitments would be an important step towards restoring trust between education employees and the state, while providing greater stability for the country’s school system.
