Montenegro marked a significant cultural milestone as the Podgorica City Theatre officially opened its first permanent home, ending more than 75 years during which the institution operated without its own dedicated venue. The theatre has welcomed over one million visitors since its establishment, making the opening one of the most important cultural developments in the capital in recent years.
Prime Minister Milojko Spajić welcomed the opening, describing it as a symbol of a society that places culture and creativity at the heart of its future. Speaking on Montenegro’s Statehood Day (13 July), he said that while courage and determination once defined the country’s struggle for independence, today culture and artistic expression are equally important in shaping its future.
Spajić also congratulated the City of Podgorica and Mayor Saša Mujović for completing the long-awaited project, noting that the new theatre will serve future generations of artists and audiences alike.
The opening of the theatre reflects Montenegro’s broader efforts to strengthen cultural infrastructure and preserve artistic heritage. Officials hope the new venue will become a hub for theatre productions, festivals and cultural events, further enriching Podgorica’s cultural life and supporting the development of the country’s creative industries.
