Montenegro has officially launched the Gvozd Wind Farm into trial operation, in partnership with Nordex and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development – EBRD .The launch was marked on Europe Day, highlighting its symbolic importance for Montenegro’s energy transition and European integration path.
The wind farm is the first state-owned energy facility launched in decades, following the start of construction of the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant in 1976. According to officials, the project will generate electricity for around 20,000 households, roughly matching the consumption of the Nikšić area. It is also the first renewable energy project in the country that will not be financed through additional charges on citizens’ electricity bills or direct state budget subsidies.
The opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, who stressed the strategic importance of the project for the country’s energy independence and its broader European path. He underlined that investments in clean energy strengthen Montenegro’s credibility as an EU candidate and support long-term sustainable development goals.
Officials described the wind farm as a key step toward a greener energy system and a more resilient economy, positioning renewable energy as a central pillar of future growth and European integration.
