Youth Assembly in Kosovo* Explores AI’s Role in Peace and Security

Young leaders from the Western Balkans gathered in Kosovo* to explore AI's potential at the 6th United Nations Youth Assembly

At the 6th United Nations Youth Assembly in Kosovo*, young leaders from the Western Balkans convened to tackle the challenges and opportunities presented by the dawn of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) era. The event was themed “Youth, Peace and Security in the AI era,” reflecting the transformative potential of AI in advancing peacebuilding efforts, conflict resolution, and social justice.

Since the last assembly in June 2023, the technological landscape has evolved dramatically. This year’s gathering highlighted how AI can foster social cohesion and trust-building across communities. “Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more available. It provides tools that can help build social cohesion throughout the region and beyond,” said Ivan Perković, a youth delegate from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Over two days, the delegates engaged in dynamic discussions and workshops, focusing on the power of AI for the greater good. Caroline Ziadeh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMIK, encouraged the 100 participants from Kosovo* and 25 regional attendees to use AI creatively and responsibly.

“Your voices and initiatives are the force behind the transformative change we collectively seek,” Ziadeh stated. The assembly also featured debates on mental health and cybersecurity, keynote speeches, and a small grant competition to support youth-led projects, underscoring the vital role of young people in shaping a positive AI-driven future.
