Two Major Tourist Roads and Heritage Sites in Southern Albania to Be Completed by Mid-2026

World Bank–financed project to boost tourism and infrastructure in key coastal and cultural destinations

Infrastructure and tourism development works in several Albanian tourist areas, financed through a World Bank loan, are expected to be completed by June 2026, according to the latest progress report. The project includes urban upgrades in Ksamil and Orikum, construction of the Borsh tourist route, and restoration of cultural landmarks such as Kanina Castle, Borsh Castle, and the Spille Cave, as well as the creation of an underwater museum in Saranda.

The World Bank–supported initiative consists of four main components: urban infrastructure improvement (USD 80.5 million), tourist site enhancement (USD 9.4 million), tourism market development (USD 10.1 million), and implementation support (USD 5.3 million). The project aims to improve southern Albania’s urban and tourism infrastructure, strengthen local economies, and enhance institutional capacity. The Bank assessed overall progress as satisfactory, noting that the interventions have already had a positive impact, including the creation of new tourism-related jobs.
