Yet Another Delay on NIS Sanctions

Belgrade has secured a one-month extension of the U.S. sanctions waiver for NIS, Serbia’s Gazprom-controlled oil company, just before the July 29 expiry.

The reprieve allows Serbia to continue crude oil imports amid tight international restrictions tied to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

With the Pančevo refinery critical to national energy supply, Energy Minister Dubravka Đedović Handanović warned that any disruption would ripple across the economy.

Still, the recurring short-term waivers expose ongoing vulnerability in Serbia’s energy planning—especially with winter only months away.
