Albania’s Tirana-Durrës-TIA Railway Nears Completion

High-speed connection to transform travel and boost regional integration

Albania is on the brink of a major transportation upgrade as the Tirana-Durrës-Tirana International Airport (TIA) railway nears completion. With 80% of construction finished, the 34-kilometer railway is being fully modernised, while a new 7.4-kilometer branch will connect the capital to the airport. Trains will reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, cutting travel times to just 22 minutes between Tirana and Durrës and 12 minutes to TIA.

The €90 million project is backed by a €35.9 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and a €35.5 million grant from the Western Balkans Investment Fund. The railway will include multiple stops, improving accessibility and convenience for commuters, tourists, and business travellers alike.

Albania’s railway revival doesn’t stop here. Plans are underway to rehabilitate the Vorë-Hani i Hotit line, linking the country with Montenegro, and the Durrës-Rrogozhinë line, part of the strategic Corridor VIII project. These developments aim to position Albania as a key transit hub in the Western Balkans.

With faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transport, the Tirana-Durrës-TIA railway is set to transform mobility in Albania. By strengthening economic ties and boosting tourism, the project signals a new era for the nation’s infrastructure and regional connectivity.
