Bosnia Explores Strategic Lithium Reserves

Bosnia’s untapped lithium reserves jold strategic potential

Bosnia and Herzegovina may be sitting on a trove of lithium, a critical resource for the global transition to green energy, but the extent of its deposits remains largely unexplored. Preliminary estimates suggest the eastern region alone holds over one million tons of concentrate, a figure that positions the country as a potential key player in the lithium market.

This insight was shared during a public discussion in Sarajevo organized by the Center for Policy and Governance and the Green Club in the BiH Parliament. The event focused on critical materials and strategies for sustainable resource management.

Research so far has identified 143 locations across the country with confirmed reserves of strategic raw materials, including coal (five billion metric tons), iron ore (653 million tons), and bauxite (120 million tons). Yet lithium—a vital component in batteries for electric vehicles—has captured the spotlight.

“Lithium has not been fully explored,” said Haris Abaspahić of the Center for Policy and Governance. “Over a million tons of concentrate have been identified around Lopare, with further deposits stretching along the Drina River and into central Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

The municipalities of Lopare and Ugljevik alone are estimated to hold 1.5 million tons of lithium carbonate, with ongoing investigations in areas like Čajniče, Jezero, Šipovo, and Bijeljina aiming to uncover additional reserves. In total, 20 potential lithium sites have been identified.

Lithium’s significance extends far beyond Bosnia. It is among the 30 critical materials on the EU’s strategic list and is similarly prioritized by the U.S., reflecting its global importance as a cornerstone of the clean energy revolution.

As Bosnia begins to map its mineral wealth, questions remain over how these resources will be managed. Effective governance and sustainable policies will be key to ensuring this discovery benefits the country’s economy without compromising its environmental future.
