Sarajevo’s Beloved Ćevap Gains Official Brand Status

In a triumph of taste and tradition, the Sarajevo ćevap has officially been crowned a protected brand, wrapping up a meticulous process to secure its status as a product of geographical origin in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The news, announced within the historic walls of Sarajevo’s City Hall, sets the stage for the next culinary conquest: European Union protection. And if that weren’t enough, the Sarajevo somun is next in line for its own recognition.

Mayor Benjamina Karić, beaming with pride, called the day a landmark moment for Sarajevo, noting that the city had embarked on this flavorful journey two years ago.

“It’s vital that we brand what is distinctly ours. The Sarajevo ćevap is now officially safeguarded as a brand, a signature of our cultural and culinary identity. Next, we’ll pursue its protection in the EU. And we’re not stopping there—Sarajevo somun, you’re up next!” Karić quipped, tipping her hat to USAID for their unwavering support.

Courtney Chubb, the USAID Mission Director in Bosnia and Herzegovina, couldn’t hide her enthusiasm for the now-officially famous ćevap.

“Not only is Sarajevo ćevap absolutely delicious, but it’s also a cornerstone of the city’s tourist and gastronomic appeal. No trip to Sarajevo is complete without indulging in this local treasure,” Chubb remarked, with a knowing smile. She admitted that the first stop on her Sarajevo tour for any visiting friends from the States is always a ćevabdžinica.

“Because, let’s face it, if you haven’t tasted ćevap, you haven’t really felt the heartbeat of Sarajevo,” she added with a wink.

With this official brand status, Sarajevo ćevap isn’t just a dish—it’s a statement. A statement that says: when it comes to blending history, culture, and cuisine, Sarajevo knows how to serve it up with style. And now, the rest of the world will know it too.
