North Macedonia’s Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) reported that, for the first time, more than half (55.72%) of the country’s electricity production capacity now originated from renewable sources.
According to its 2024 annual report, solar power had surpassed hydropower—contributing 28.40% of capacity compared to hydro’s 24.13%—in what the ERC described as a major shift in the national energy profile.
The Commission stated that this marked a crucial milestone in the country’s transition toward sustainable energy, and added that the growing share of renewables would require strategic investment to ensure long-term energy stability and independence.
ERC president Marko Bislimoski was quoted as saying that the country needed to stimulate investment to balance its energy needs and strengthen both energy security and self-reliance.
The report further indicated that key developments in 2024 included the completion of the certification process for the state gas transmission operator, Nomagas, and the beginning of licensing procedures for the heating company Energy Ecolink, formerly Toplana Skoplje Sever.
