Croatia Expands Vegan Food Offer as Plant-Based Tourism Grows

Croatia is increasingly adapting its food and tourism offer to the growing demand for vegan and plant-based options, as more visitors look for restaurants and destinations that can accommodate different dietary preferences

The trend reflects broader changes in international tourism, with travellers increasingly considering food choices when selecting where to stay and where to eat. For Croatia, a country strongly associated with Mediterranean cuisine, this is creating opportunities to combine traditional ingredients with modern plant-based dishes.

Restaurants and hotels across the country are expanding their vegan menus, offering everything from plant-based versions of familiar dishes to fresh salads, vegetable-based meals and locally sourced ingredients. The development is particularly relevant in major tourist destinations, where hospitality businesses cater to visitors from a wide range of countries.

Croatia’s traditional cuisine already provides a strong foundation for plant-based dining, with ingredients such as olive oil, seasonal vegetables, legumes, herbs and grains forming an important part of Mediterranean cooking. Some local dishes can therefore be adapted relatively easily to vegan diets without losing their regional character. The growing availability of vegan food could also help Croatian destinations appeal to younger travellers, who are increasingly conscious of sustainability, food production and environmental impact. Providing more diverse menus allows hotels, restaurants and tour operators to compete for a broader international customer base.

The shift is part of a wider transformation in tourism, where travellers increasingly expect destinations to offer not only accommodation and attractions but also experiences tailored to different lifestyles and personal preferences. For Croatia, strengthening its plant-based offer could become another way to diversify its tourism product while keeping local and Mediterranean cuisine at its centre.
