Croatia Targets Illegal Short Term Rentals with New Hospitality Law

Stricter regulations aim to bring greater order to the tourism sector

Croatia is preparing a new Hospitality Act designed to curb illegal short term rentals and strengthen oversight of the rapidly growing private accommodation market. Authorities say the amendments will introduce clearer rules and stricter controls to ensure that all providers operate within the legal framework.

The proposed changes are expected to tighten registration requirements and improve inspections, with the goal of protecting fair competition and safeguarding guests.

Officials stress that the move is not directed at legitimate hosts but at those operating without proper permits or avoiding tax obligations.

The government says the new law will contribute to better regulation of the tourism sector, enhance transparency and align Croatia’s practices with European standards, while maintaining the country’s strong appeal as a leading Mediterranean destination.
