Slovenia Launches Bid to Join Elite in European Space Agency

Slovenia has submitted a formal application for full membership in the European Space Agency (ESA) at the Space Summit in Seville, announced by the Slovenian government. Over the next year, ESA will evaluate Slovenia's readiness for full membership.

Official figures indicate that in recent years, Slovenia has developed a promising space sector, comprising over 40 small and medium-sized enterprises, taking the lead in Earth observation, the development of innovative technologies, new materials, and three Slovenian satellites.

The two-day summit in the Spanish city includes four sessions where, among other matters, Europe’s future space strategy will be shaped with ESA at the helm of the continent’s green transformation, mitigating the impacts of crises on Earth, and spearheading Europe’s efforts to reduce space debris.

Additionally, a resolution will be adopted concerning the European strategy for space exploration, sustainability, and space travel logistics, along with a joint declaration on the use of outer space to accelerate Europe’s green transition, ensure autonomous access to space, and enhance the commercialization within the European space framework.
