Bosnia and Herzegovina Opens 21 Kilometres of New Motorway on Corridor Vc

The new sections are expected to improve road safety, shorten travel times and strengthen connections between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the European Union

Bosnia and Herzegovina has opened the Zenica Tunnel and the Nemila–Poprikuše motorway section, adding 21 kilometres of modern motorway to Corridor Vc (5c), the country’s largest infrastructure project.

Luigi Soreca, the EU Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighted the importance of the milestone, noting that each completed section brings better connectivity for citizens and businesses. Corridor Vc forms part of the wider European transport network and is a key route for improving the movement of people and goods across the country and towards EU markets. The European Union has provided €870 million in grants for Corridor Vc through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), including €61.5 million for the sections inaugurated today.

The EU has also reserved €522 million for WBIF projects through the Growth Plan’s Reform and Growth Facility, although access to the funding depends on Bosnia and Herzegovina establishing the necessary legal framework and implementing key reforms set out in its Reform Agenda.

Soreca stressed that completing Corridor Vc as soon as possible remains a shared priority, while emphasising the importance of protecting EU funds through integrity and transparency at every stage of the process. This includes tendering, construction supervision and financial reporting. The EU has reiterated its readiness to continue supporting the project as Bosnia and Herzegovina advances its transport infrastructure and reform commitments.
