Bosnia and Herzegovina has recorded the sharpest recovery in European aviation, with passenger numbers up 31.1% in the first half of 2025 compared to last year, far outpacing the EU average of 4.5%.
The surge is led by Sarajevo Airport, now operating at 107% of its pre-pandemic traffic, while Mostar and Banja Luka are also hitting record levels.
According to Airports Council International (ACI) Europe, BiH remains an “emerging market” with vast untapped potential, though growth hinges on infrastructure upgrades, sustainable regulation and stronger management of airports.
Experts argue that a national airline is now critical to reduce reliance on foreign carriers and ensure lasting connectivity.
Sarajevo is already planning terminal and runway expansion, Mostar is targeting new routes to Scandinavia, and Tuzla is strengthening ties with Turkey and Austria.
If backed by coherent policy and investment, BiH could secure its place as one of Europe’s fastest-growing aviation markets – and transform a fleeting boom into a long-term economic lift-off.
