Croatia Rolls Out First Electro-Battery Train

Blending innovation with sustainability, Croatia’s new hybrid train marks a pivotal shift in eco-conscious travel

Croatia has unveiled its first electro-battery train, a sleek new chapter in sustainable rail transport. Officially entering service on the Zagreb–Bjelovar route, this state-of-the-art train is the star of a €17.1 million project backed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (2021–2026).

Built under KONČAR’s expertise, it combines battery power with traditional electrification, reaching up to 160 km/h on electric lines and 120 km/h on non-electrified tracks.

Designed with both accessibility and comfort in mind, it features 157 seats, ramps for wheelchair access, space for bicycles, onboard Wi-Fi, CCTV, and a modern passenger information system.

With six charging stations also installed, this marks a major stride toward greener public transport on Croatia’s still largely non-electrified rail network.

Transport Minister Oleg Butković, HŽ Putnički prijevoz CEO Željko Ukić, and KONČAR head Gordan Kolak were aboard for its inaugural journey—a symbol of a cleaner, smarter future on rails.
