Croatian manufacturer KONČAR has presented a new electro-diesel passenger train at the InnoTrans transport technology fair in Berlin, showcasing the latest addition to Croatia’s efforts to modernise its railway fleet.
The new train is the second unit from a series being produced by KONČAR for Croatian Railways Passenger Transport (HŽPP). The first entered regular service on the Zagreb–Split route in September, where the combination of electric and diesel propulsion allows it to travel across sections of railway infrastructure with different levels of electrification.
The trains are designed to provide greater comfort and accessibility for passengers, with 150 seats, free Wi-Fi, power outlets, modern passenger information systems, bicycle storage and wheelchair access ramps. The units can also be coupled, allowing HŽPP to increase capacity when passenger demand is higher. The new electro-diesel fleet forms part of a wider €57.3 million investment in six trains for long-distance passenger transport.
The trains are intended for routes connecting Zagreb with destinations including Split, Koprivnica, Osijek, Čakovec, Kotoriba, Zadar, Rijeka and Pula via Slovenia. All six trains are expected to enter service by the end of 2026.
The presentation in Berlin also highlights KONČAR’s growing role in the development of modern railway technology. The company has been involved in several projects to renew Croatia’s passenger fleet, including battery-electric trains capable of operating on non-electrified lines. Its battery-electric multiple unit can reach up to 120 km/h on non-electrified routes and up to 160 km/h when operating under overhead electric power.
The latest train was presented at InnoTrans, one of the world’s leading transport technology trade fairs, only a week after the first unit entered regular passenger service between Zagreb and Split. KONČAR said the company’s participation in the Berlin event provides an opportunity to showcase Croatian railway technology to an international audience.
