Italy and Albania Seal Deal for Adriatic Energy Link

Italy and Albania unite for pioneering undersea energy connection

Italy and Albania are on the brink of a landmark agreement to establish a submarine energy link across the Adriatic Sea, a move set to redefine energy cooperation in the region.

Giorgia Meloni

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that talks are in their final stages, with plans for an undersea cable that will directly connect the two nations.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama highlighted the strategic importance of the project, which involves shared ownership and significant investment to expand Albania’s energy production capabilities.

Edi Rama

The initiative aligns with Albania’s ambition to secure energy independence and transition into a major energy exporter to the European Union.

Rama also underscored Albania’s resilience during the 2022-2023 energy crisis, noting that the country avoided price hikes seen elsewhere in the region and will reduce electricity prices by 10.5% from 1 February. The project marks a crucial step in strengthening infrastructure and energy partnerships across Europe.
