Price Surge of Fish for Feast of St. Nicholas

The festive indulgence of fish for St. Nicholas is marred by a 30% price hike, with families opting for cheaper options

The Feas of St. Nicholas, a cherished occasion in North Macedonia, has been dampened by soaring food prices. Traditionally, fish consumption peaks during this holiday, often surpassing the year’s total sales.

This year, however, families are faced with a 30% surge in prices, particularly for fresh fish like carp and trout, now costing 350 denars per kilogram. Salmon filets have become a luxury at 1,000 denars per kilogram, while frozen whiting remains the most affordable option at 150 denars.

The inflationary pressures extend beyond fish, with staples like cabbage, olives, and walnuts also rising in price. Imported fresh fish from Greece, Norway, and Serbia adds to the cost burden.

Despite these challenges, North Macedonian families remain determined to uphold the tradition, though many are scaling back celebrations. As the economic strain intensifies, the spirit of St. Nicholas persists, albeit with a more subdued festive tables.
