Austria Extends Border Controls with Hungary and Slovenia Until May 2025

Austria to extend border controls with Hungary and Slovenia

Austria has decided to extend its internal border controls with Hungary and Slovenia for another six months, until May 2025.

The extension aims to curb illegal migration and human trafficking, according to Austrian authorities. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner highlighted the importance of these controls in combating illegal migration, not only within Austria but across the European Union.

Introduced during the 2015 migrant crisis, Austria’s border checks have been periodically renewed or lifted since then. Austria is not alone in implementing such measures; other Schengen countries, including Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and Slovenia, also maintain border controls.
