Germans Spend the Least on Food Among EU Members

Residents of Germany spend less on food, medical services, and care than citizens of any other European Union member state

Despite rising prices due to high inflation, these expenses accounted for only 13.4% of total consumer spending in Germany last year, the lowest among the 26 EU countries, according to a study conducted by the market research company NIQ.

Germany also ranks last when considering overall retail spending. In 2023, only about 25% of the euros spent were allocated to retail in Germany, compared to an EU-wide average of one-third, and nearly half in countries like Hungary and Bulgaria.

Higher purchasing power in German households means that a smaller portion of income is spent on necessities like food, clothing, and other goods, the study’s authors explained. However, living and energy costs are higher, leading to greater spending on services and leisure activities, as well as savings and financial investments.
