Seine is Bit Cold, But Not Too Bad, Says Paris Major

In a bold demonstration of confidence in the city's efforts to clean the Seine, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a swim in the river, which had been off-limits for over a century

This move comes just days before the city hosts the Olympic Games, where several events are set to take place on the historic waterway.

“The water is very good. A bit cold, but not too bad,” Hidalgo remarked after her swim, underscoring the river’s improved conditions.

Swimming in the Seine had been prohibited for more than 100 years due to pollution concerns. However, recent efforts to clean the river have shown significant progress.

Water quality tests in early June revealed unsafe levels of certain bacteria, but subsequent measures have led to a marked improvement, ensuring the safety of the athletes and the public.

Hidalgo’s swim is a testament to the city’s commitment to environmental health and safety as Paris prepares to welcome the world to the 2024 Olympic Games.
