Cheese dishes hold a special place in the hearts of food lovers, and Taste Atlas has ranked the ten best from around the globe. Notably, a dish from Serbia claimed the third spot on this prestigious list.
Belmuž, a traditional specialty from the mountainous regions of southeastern Serbia—spanning from Negotin through Svrljig to Pirot—is crafted from young sheep and cow cheeses and cornmeal. This iconic dish is recognised on Serbia’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
According to some interpretations, belmuž gets its name from the white cheese used in it, while the name also nods to the fact that it was often prepared by men, as stirring the thick mixture in a large pot required strong hands.
In the past, belmuž was a daily staple among Balkan shepherds.
