Violent Storm Rips Through Split, Ferry Collision Reported

Poljud Stadium roof damaged, trees downed, streets flooded, and injuries confirmed

A powerful and fast-moving storm struck the Croatian coastal city of Split, unleashing hail, torrential rain, and hurricane-force winds that caused extensive material damage and injuries. Notably, sections of the roof of the famed Poljud Stadium were torn off, dozens of trees were uprooted, cars were smashed by falling debris, and streets were left inundated.

In the port, the storm caused a moored ferry to break loose and collide with two other vessels, one of which sank. At least three people were injured, and over 400 emergency calls were logged within hours. Transport services were briefly suspended, and cleanup operations are ongoing.

This storm is one of the most severe to hit Split in years and underscores growing vulnerability to extreme weather events along the Adriatic coast. The frequency and intensity of such episodes are renewing calls for climate adaptation and resilient urban infrastructure
