Decline in Religious Callings Raises Concerns in Croatia

Fewer young people are choosing monastic life, reflecting broader social and demographic shifts.

Croatia is experiencing a continued decline in the number of monks and nuns, as interest in religious vocations weakens among younger generations. Recent figures point to a steady drop in new entrants to monasteries and convents, mirroring trends seen across much of Europe.

Church representatives link the decline to changing social values, lower birth rates and evolving life priorities, which are reducing the pool of potential candidates.

At the same time, existing religious communities are aging, raising concerns about long-term sustainability and the future of monastic institutions.

The trend highlights a wider transformation within Croatian society, where traditional religious paths are becoming less prominent.
