Serbia and France Sign Memorandum for Nuclear Program Development

Serbia and France have inked a strategic partnership through a memorandum focusing on the development of a civilian nuclear program and the advancement of low-carbon energy technologies

The Serbian Cabinet has ratified a Memorandum of Understanding with the French Electric Power Company (EDF), establishing a long-term partnership for dialogue and collaboration in energy transition and low-carbon technologies, as reported by the Ministry of Mining and Energy.

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović announced, “Through this Memorandum, we are forming a strategic alliance with EDF to evaluate the possibilities for developing a civil nuclear program in Serbia, fostering professional development, and facilitating technical knowledge exchange.”

She further mentioned EDF’s interest in working with Elektroprivreda Srbije on developing new projects and refurbishing existing hydropower facilities, including those of regional significance, to enhance Serbia’s energy security using top international environmental, technological, and operational standards.

Đedović Handanović also noted that the Memorandum includes potential collaboration on energy storage solutions, notably batteries and green hydrogen, and efficient energy utilisation strategies.

This announcement followed her meeting with French Ambassador Pierre Cochard in Belgrade, focusing on the forthcoming visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to French President Emmanuel Macron and energy sector cooperation.
