Montenegro has officially become an operational member of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), enabling citizens and businesses to send and receive euros across 40 European countries, including all EU states, faster, more securely, and at lower costs.
The Central Bank of Montenegro highlighted that this milestone comes less than a year after Montenegro became the first Western Balkan nation to join SEPA, calling it a historic achievement.
Personal transfers up to €200 are now free of charge, while electronic transfers up to €20,000 carry a maximum fee of €1.99, and transfers above €20,000 are capped at €25.
The launch of SEPA transactions reflects close collaboration between the government, the central bank, and eleven local commercial banks, with support from the European Commission and the World Bank. Faster, cheaper, and standardized payments are expected to benefit citizens and businesses directly, fostering economic growth, financial inclusion, and preparation for eventual EU membership.
