Mandić Calls for Strategic Partnership With the United States

The Montenegrin parliament speaker said the time is right to place relations with Washington on stronger foundations and deepen cooperation in key areas.

Montenegrin Parliament Speaker Andrija Mandić met with Michael Kiz, chargé d’affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Montenegro ( Acting Head of Mission ), stressing that the current moment presents an opportunity to build a strategic partnership with the United States. Mandić said Montenegro is seeking closer cooperation with Washington, particularly in areas that deliver tangible results and contribute to the country’s long-term stability and development.

During the meeting, Mandić highlighted the importance of cooperation in combating transnational organized crime and corruption, noting that U.S. support in these fields is of particular significance. He also argued that stronger bilateral ties should be based on the historical connections between the two nations and expressed a desire to build trust and demonstrate the role of Montenegro’s Serb community as a factor of stability and reconciliation.

Kiz said that since arriving in Montenegro earlier this year, he has focused on strengthening cooperation with key institutions and partners across the country. He underscored the importance of a planned intergovernmental agreement as a potential step forward in bilateral relations and welcomed efforts to deepen engagement between the two countries.

Both officials also emphasized the value of parliamentary diplomacy. Mandić noted that cooperation with the U.S. Congress has been one of the priorities of his mandate, while Kiz said he would work to open additional channels of cooperation between the Montenegrin Parliament and the U.S. Congress.
