Montenegro Will Assume Council of Europe Presidency in Autumn

Montenegro will take over the rotating presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on November 10, 2026, marking the first time the country has held the position since joining the organization.

President Jakov Milatović discussed the upcoming presidency with Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset, highlighting what he described as a symbolic moment for Montenegro. The presidency will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the country’s membership in the Council of Europe and comes at a time when Podgorica is advancing its European integration agenda.

The talks also touched on Montenegro’s recent progress in EU accession negotiations, including the closure of two additional negotiating chapters and the successful hosting of the EU–Western Balkans Summit in Tivat. According to Milatović, these developments demonstrate the country’s continued commitment to European reforms and regional cooperation.

Montenegro’s presidency of the Committee of Ministers is expected to overlap with the final phase of its EU accession negotiations, providing an additional opportunity to showcase its commitment to the rule of law, democratic governance and European values.

Milatović emphasized that Montenegro will continue to play an active role in strengthening multilateral cooperation, supporting democratic institutions and promoting the European perspective of the Western Balkans region.
