End of an Era: Al Jazeera Balkans Shuts Down After 14 Years

First Al Jazeera channel in a non-Arabic, non-English language goes dark, raising questions over the future of international public-interest journalism in the region

Al Jazeera Balkans, the Sarajevo-based arm of the Qatari media giant, is set to cease operations after 14 years of broadcasting across Southeast Europe.

Launched in 2011 and praised for its high editorial standards, AJB stood out as the network’s first venture in a language other than Arabic or English, reaching viewers in Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, and beyond.

Its closure marks a significant loss for regional journalism, especially given its acclaimed documentary work, cross-border news coverage, and unique AJB DOC film festival.

The channel had purchased Sarajevo’s NTV Studio 99 in 2010 and quickly became a respected media player in the Balkans’ complex post-conflict media landscape.

While no official explanation has been given, reports suggest the decision stems from financial pressures in Doha.

In a media ecosystem often dominated by nationalist narratives, AJB’s departure leaves a void in balanced, multilingual reporting across the former Yugoslavia.
