Solar Power Sparks Change in Western Serbia with EU Backing

Solar panels and green projects bring a bright new chapter to Serbia’s public spaces

With support from the European Union, western Serbia is quietly undergoing a green transformation.

In Užice, Čajetina, Požega, and Bajina Bašta, solar panels are being installed on public buildings—from city pools and theatres to schools and sports halls—thanks to more than €1.3 million in EU grants under the EU PRO Plus programme, implemented by UNOPS.

One standout example is the agricultural school in Požega, where rooftop solar meets a new Dutch-funded plant nursery, nurturing both energy efficiency and environmental education.

The initiative, led by RRA Zlatibor, aims to cut public electricity costs by up to 95% and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

These projects are part of a broader €9.6 million EU effort to advance integrated territorial development in Serbia, set to continue under the €15 million EU INTEGRA programme.

For a region long overlooked, the solar shift is more than just energy—it’s a signal of sustainable renewal.
