New Adria Film & TV Academy Launches Regional Awards

A new cultural initiative is taking shape in the Adria region. The founding teams behind the Sarajevo Film Festival, Zagreb Film Festival, and Festival of Auteur Film in Belgrade have joined forces to establish the Adriatic Film and TV Academy (AFA), which will oversee the region’s most comprehensive awards for cinema and television.

The AFA Awards honour the finest film and TV productions from the countries of the former Yugoslavia, building on the legacy of the Heart of Sarajevo Awards for TV series, which were previously presented by the Sarajevo Film Festival. With this expanded concept, the recognition now extends to outstanding achievements in both film and television.

The Academy’s mission is to promote the region’s most exceptional creative works and help elevate their visibility on the international stage. More than 600 professionals from across the region’s film and TV industries will serve as voting members, representing disciplines from directing and acting to editing and cinematography. Initial members are drawn from those previously involved in the Sarajevo Film Festival’s TV jury, and new members will be invited on an ongoing basis.

Submissions for films and series are open until 15 July 2025 at 23:59. Eligible entries include fiction and documentary films released between 1 July 2024 and 1 July 2025, and TV series aired between 1 April 2024 and 1 July 2025. Producers and rights holders from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Kosovo* are encouraged to apply.

The AFA initiative is seen as a significant step in furthering regional cooperation and excellence in storytelling across the Adria region.
