Greece Launches Urgent Modernisation of Evzoni Border

A new gateway to Greece: faster, smarter, and finally fit for a European summer

Greek authorities have announced that they are fast-tracking the modernisation of the Evzoni border crossing to reduce waiting times and improve the travel experience for tourists entering and exiting the country.

At a joint meeting led by Deputy Minister of Interior for Macedonia-Thrace Konstantinos P. Gkoulekas and Dr Ioannis Savvas of the Decentralised Administration of Macedonia-Thrace, it was stated that the first phase would involve increasing the number of border officers — a move considered essential to speeding up passport and customs procedures.

Officials reported that a second phase would focus on upgrading infrastructure, with a complete reconstruction of the crossing facilities expected by 2026.

They said the project aims to present a modern, European image of Greece at one of its busiest land entry points.

Deputy Minister Gkoulekas was quoted saying that measures are being taken to ease congestion as early as this summer, while Dr Savvas emphasised the government’s commitment to accelerating border checks.

With over a million travellers already passing through in the first months of 2025, authorities highlighted the urgency of the improvements.
