Slovenia’s Bold Railway Investment

Slovenia’s rail network is making a historic leap, signing a €152 million deal to purchase 30 state-of-the-art electric locomotives from Alstom, marking the biggest fleet upgrade in two decades

Slovenian Railways has signed a €152 million contract to purchase 30 high-performance electric locomotives from Alstom, a major step in modernising the country’s freight transport sector.

This marks the largest fleet upgrade in two decades, part of a broader strategy to improve efficiency and competitiveness.

The deal, which will see the delivery of Alstom’s Traxx 3 MS locomotives, will phase out 38 outdated units, some of which are over 45 years old.

These new locomotives, faster, more powerful, and environmentally friendly, will be a crucial asset as Slovenian Railways looks to expand into international markets.

With a strategic partnership with Czech logistics giant EP Logistics International, Slovenian Railways aims to strengthen its position in Europe, targeting markets in Croatia, Italy, Austria, and Serbia by 2026.

The investment will also fund the modernisation of rolling stock, including 12 diesel locomotives and 750 freight wagons.

The locomotives, due for delivery over the next two years, are set to revolutionise Slovenia’s freight capabilities, helping the country stay competitive as the new Koper-Divača line nears completion.
