Rijeka Hotel Revival as Croatia’s Chamber of Commerce Dives Into Hospitality

In a strategic pivot, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce is transforming a decaying hotel in Rijeka into a beacon of heritage tourism, all while securing its financial future

In an unexpected move, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK) is entering the hospitality industry, with plans to open a boutique hotel in Rijeka by 2026.

The site—a once-prized architectural gem designed by Ivan Vitić—has languished in ruin for decades. Initially conceived in the 1960s for a thriving local industry, the building is set for a dramatic renaissance, spearheaded by HGK’s dedicated subsidiary, HGK Hotels.

This venture is part of HGK’s broader strategy to counter the significant revenue loss following the abolition of mandatory membership fees for most Croatian businesses in 2022. By capitalizing on dormant assets, including key real estate holdings, HGK aims to secure long-term financial stability.

The Rijeka hotel project, offering a refined experience tied to Croatia’s modernist architectural roots, will blend local heritage with sustainable tourism practices, marking a bold new chapter for the Chamber in its pursuit of diversification and fiscal resilience.
