CIA Director William Burns Visits Sarajevo for High-Level Talks

William Burns, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States, has arrived in Sarajevo for a series of high-level meetings in the Bosnian capital

Burns is expected to hold discussions today with Almir Džuvo, the head of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Intelligence-Security Agency (OSA), as well as members of the country’s Presidency.

This visit is not Burns’ first to Bosnia and Herzegovina. He previously traveled to Sarajevo as the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, where he closely monitored the political landscape and the work of the Office of the High Representative (OHR). His past visits also saw him deeply engaged in discussions about the management of state assets and the ongoing challenges surrounding this critical issue.

Given his multiple visits and long-standing interest in the region, Burns is regarded as having a nuanced understanding of Bosnia’s complex political environment. His familiarity with the country’s affairs positions him as a key figure in U.S. efforts to support Bosnia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and adherence to the Dayton Peace Agreement—a commitment he reiterated during his 2012 visit to Sarajevo.

Appointed as CIA Director in 2021 and elevated to a Cabinet position by President Biden in June 2023, Burns brings a wealth of experience to his role, having served under six presidential administrations over a career spanning more than four decades. His visit to Sarajevo underscores the continued importance of Bosnia and Herzegovina in U.S. foreign policy and intelligence interests.
