Serbia and Romania Sign Landmark Gas Interconnection Agreement

Serbia and Romania have signed a memorandum of understanding for a gas interconnection project, which will connect Serbia’s Mokrin hub with the BRUA pipeline, enhancing regional energy security and cooperation

This initiative will connect Serbia’s Mokrin hub with the BRUA pipeline at Petrovaselo, Romania, providing Serbia with a new natural gas source. The project, with a capacity of at least 1.6 billion cubic meters per year, aims to be operational by 2028.

The agreement was signed by Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, and Romania’s Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, highlighting a new phase in their longstanding bilateral cooperation. The pipeline will span 13 kilometers in Serbia and 86 kilometers in Romania, with the Serbian segment expected to be completed by 2027.

This project underscores the importance of regional cooperation for energy security in Central and Eastern Europe. Romania, a significant gas producer in the EU, plans to boost its output further with major investments like the Neptun Deep offshore project and intensive drilling at the Caragele site.
