Serbia Commits to Nuclear Energy with New Memorandum

Serbia has taken a decisive step towards embracing nuclear energy, with five government ministries and twenty scientific and academic institutions signing a Memorandum of Understanding at the Palace of Serbia

This agreement is aimed at advancing the development and application of nuclear energy within the country.

The Memorandum was signed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Mining and Energy, Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Education. Key stakeholders including Elektroprivreda Srbije, Elektromreža Srbije, the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, the Serbian Nuclear Society, and the Directorate for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security of Serbia also joined, alongside faculties of economic, medical, and technical sciences.

Prime Minister Miloš Vučević highlighted the significance of this agreement, correcting a historical decision from the 1980s that banned nuclear energy production in Serbia. “The question of electricity is both dominant and strategic, and investing in this sector is crucial for the sovereignty and independence of our nation,” Vučević remarked, emphasizing the peaceful nature of the nuclear energy being pursued.

Vučević also reassured the public that nuclear energy development will proceed with stringent measures to protect the environment and public health. This Memorandum aims to enhance Serbia’s energy security and position the country as a leader in nuclear technology in the region.

This forward-looking agreement reflects Serbia’s dedication to sustainable and innovative energy solutions, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s energy policy.
