Russia Bans Viber, Blocking Access to the Messaging App

Russia’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor (RKN), has blocked access to the popular messaging app Viber, citing repeated failures to remove criminal content from the platform.

According to tech news site Telecom Daily, Viber has 17 million unique daily users in Russia.

In its statement, RKN explained that access to Viber was restricted due to violations of national laws aimed at preventing the use of online messaging services for terrorist and extremist crimes, drug sales, and the dissemination of illegal information.

Viber was founded in 2010 by Igor Magazinik, who emigrated from Russia to Israel at the age of 16, and Israeli-American businessman Talmon Marco. The company was acquired by Japanese tech giant Rakuten in 2014.
