Serbia Lags Behind Europe

Despite progress, Serbia still trails EU standards in income and living conditions

Recent analysis shows that Serbia needs approximately 35 years to reach the average standard of living in the EU, and around 26 years to match EU average wages. Despite nearly two centuries of modernization efforts, significant gaps remain in income, economic development, and overall quality of life compared to European neighbors.

Economists emphasize that these long-term delays reflect systemic issues that cannot be solved overnight.

While progress has been made in infrastructure and education, the country still faces challenges in productivity, wage growth, and business competitiveness.

The findings highlight the need for sustained reforms and strategic planning, aiming to accelerate Serbia’s economic convergence with Europe. Policymakers are urged to focus on innovation, investment, and policies that can narrow the gap more effectively for future generations.
